How to Remove "Owner Passwords" from Restricted PDFs

You download a perfectly valid PDF report that you need to highlight and annotate for a team meeting. But when you open it, Adobe hits you with an ugly error message: "Printing and Editing are restricted." This happens because of an Owner Password constraint.

User vs. Owner Passwords

A "User" password prevents you from opening the file at all without the key (think: Bank Statements). An "Owner" password lets you open it, but applies digital chains forbidding printing, copying text, or merging.

Stripping the Encryption

If you have legal access to the document, hitting these roadblocks is infuriating. By uploading the file to an unlocking utility and providing the current authorization, the server decrypts the RC4 or AES envelope, completely stripping the restriction flags. The output file you download is permanently "unlocked," meaning you can merge it or print it without further annoyance.
